What happens to the EHIC card if we:

leave Europe with a withdrawal agreement

If we leave with a withdrawal agreement in place there will be a transition period when the EHIC card will still be valid – this period is currently from the 29 March 2019 to 31 December 2020 to complete negotiations on future UK-EU relationship. During this time, all EU law would apply in the UK, so that British citizens would have exactly the same rights and guarantees as before.

leave Europe without a withdrawal agreement

If the UK leaves without an agreement the EHIC card will no longer be valid. If you are travelling to any of the countries listed you will need separate travel insurance to ensure you are covered for all health emergencies or problems.

EHIC Countries (currently also includes UK)
Austria Greece Norway
Belgium Hungary Poland
Bulgaria Iceland Portugal
Croatia Ireland Romania
Republic of Cyprus Italy Serbia
Czech Republic Latvia Slovakia
Denmark Liechtenstein Slovenia
Estonia Lithuania Spain
Finland Luxembourg Sweden
France Malta Switzerland
